War Damage (2) - On the 22 April 1941 at the height of the German bombing of Plymouth the house was hit by stray incendary bombs intended for Devonport Dockyard and completely gutted by the ensuing fire. The damage included the destruction of the portraits of the family, including 3 generations by Reynolds of which only one portrait survived. The best of the other pictures to survive were 3 seascapes by William Van De Velds. Luckily much of the furniture was saved from the fire, together with the Royal Entrance and most of the outer walls although replacements to the battlements and parapets would be necessary.
