War Damage (5) - The war damage commission, following a recommendation by the Ancient Monuments Department of the Ministry of Works agreed to replace part of the house. Kennelm, the 6th Earl then commissioned Mr Adrian Gilbert Scott as Architect for the reconstruction. Because the compensation was not sufficient the West Wing was abandoned and the house was to be rebuilt with a more manageable 16th century plan. Exterior walls were retained where possible and gaps filled with salvaged stone and matching infill. Mr Scott continued in traditional Georgian layout but with a simpler method of construction. Around the first floor a gallery was built to provide a convenient and well lit access to the bedrooms.
