WESTERN BELLE – pictured during wartime when blitz weary evacuees seeking refuge at Millbrook and Whitsands formed huge queues at North Corner for the Millbrook Ferry, Devon belle and Western belle operated a shuttle service, so dangerously overloaded at times that the rubbing strakes were in the water. Jack Abbot, ex skipper of the Western Belle, recalls his endless requests for passengers to move along, which invariably resulted in yet more space being found on board
